The everyday benefits of Linux

Everyday I thank myself for always running Linux, be that on my Laptop or my Home network. Today for example I forgot to dump some stuff on to my pen-drive to take to work. If I'd have been running only Windows then I'd be really stuck right now and feeling rather embarrassed. Fact is because I do run Linux I was simply able to log-in to my home network from work securely via SSH and access the files I needed. Of course you can do the same with Windows but the fact remains that I've yet to see a Windows box stay up for more than week without needing a reboot for one reason or another (usually a BSOD) - you can disagree all you want if you're a Windows Fan-boy but I know from 18yrs of IT experience that I am correct.

risingdragon migrated to windows

Just as I'm preeching about Linux and Windows I get the email I have been dreading. The risingdragon.org.uk domain and hosting has been moved over to a Windows box. Not so good news (IMHO). I must admit I do mind about this, mostly because our favourite company Microsoft have a bad reputation when it comes to servers and security. I know myself (because I have done it) that you can actually, with patience, secure an NT class server. The problem is the amount of bugs and exploits that have yet to rear it's ugly head it's unlikely to stay secure for any amount of time. Unlike Unix class server's, Windows ones treat things differently, in Unix (and Linux) everything is treated as a file. If you don't have the permissions to read, edit or execute it then you simply can't. This model of security is more advanced than Windows with user-levels.

Well I got an email a few days ago, one which I am not exactly too pleased about if I am honest. For a good few years now I have had the risingdragon domain hosted with a small but reliable hosting company. Well, it's a one man outfit I think because regardless of what I request, ask moan or inquire about it's always the same guy that answers - rather like me I guess. However I digress, I got the below email:
...Goodbye Windows Hello Debian!

Tagged Under: debian, windows, friday.Oh yes it is and I for one am glad this week is out the way now and I can look forward to the weekend. It's been a busy and stressy week for me with one thing and another. Work is busy busy busy and zapping my time quite a lot. I'm desperate to re-write the core engine that runs this site and give it a real API that I can hook in to. The last few big re-writes have seen me just gaffer tape it all up together with basically everything I require. I need to re-evaluate that and anything core should stay that and extra stuff should really be plug-in based. I think it would make sense; not something I make a great deal of most of the time.
