I've been looking at the Twitter API in depth and I think it might actually make a good service to make a bot on. Using a combination of posts, RSS and text messages to control what the bot does and information it sends back, via it's responses like any other user does. So I might start writing one.

Goodbye BOTS

Recently I have had some real problems with BOTS coming to the site and in particular trying to use BBCode and provide links. Now because I made a choice some years ago not to use the standard URL BBCode it meant that I didn't have that problem but it would appear that the new bots can actually try and use my BBCode. This means that filtering them out had gotten to the point where I would end up filtering a perfectly valid person out. I'd not got around to letting people sign up again (those who remember there details are free to log in and comment away and it goes live) so I decided to deploy an image validation function, just like the ones you see on many sites already. Now so long as you enter the correct letters your comment will go live straight away and I don't have to sit killing all the BOT spam and nor do you have to be logged in. The entire time you are at the site the same letters will appear on each comment page you decide to comment on and they are specific to YOU (yeah evil session tracking! muhahah!).
