Oops I bought an iPAQ

Had to, no seriously... As much as it pained me (and trust me it did) to buy something that runs Windows mobile, in all reality I had to make a choice. Basically my trusty Palm, after four years of daily battering, decided to give up the ghost. Now I loved my Palm, it did everything I needed it to do but it also lacked in a few areas. My fault that it did, I bought it just at the wrong time, just as new PDA's suddenly burst on to the scene packed with features; I bought too early. Sadly it was soon overtaken by newer models but I stuck with it because it with a few tweaks and writing my own apps for it I managed to get it to do pretty much everything I had wanted it to do. The only thing I could never get it to do with was sync with my email and calendar at work and only because they refuse to support it (due to the email client we use).
So due to the fact I start I new job, one that will probably make me in to a meeting monkey and the need to be a lot more mobile, I decided to buy an iPAQ. I bought one because I know they're supported at my place of work and already I am enjoying the benefits of instant email via Wi-Fi (we have a massive network), contact back-up of my mobile and what not. I'll do a review with the model number when I get the time.
This has now opened another Pandora's box for me. I could really do with a Wireless router now... :)

The firs order of business with an ipaq is to put DopeWars on it.
No, seriously, do it.
Fag breaks will never be the same again.
Which model did you go for?

I went for the HX 2400 Series EDIT: Turns out that the places I bought it from and HP have a strange way of numbering the models. In fact it is a HX but it's actually, according to the hardware, HX 2490b. Having a good look around the web confirms this. linky. Exactly the correct spec as mine except mines a series which apparently gives you 128mb of user accessible memory rather than the standard 80mb. All very confusing, no wonder I was having problems finding my exact model on the web. *tuts*
I could have gone for the iPAQ smart phone but I opted not to. Mainly because it's too big and mostly because if I loose it or it breaks I am without both a PDA and a mobile. A better model was there in this range but I knocked them down on price and got a free 1gb SD-Card to boot. The slightly better model than mine had more RAM and a faster processor but yet the very same battery... with a lot less standby and running time. I need this to be reliable and so my choice suited me the best for my cash!
It'll do what I need it too. I mean, it's about 4 times the power of my Palm and that was adequate for me until it died!
We'll see about the dope wars ;)
My main problem now is at home. I need a fucking Windows Partition again, just as I had deleted it! heh!

I still have my old HP2210, and I had to install a path on it for the SD Card slot as it kept sucking the battery dry like a leech.
Surely here is a *nix compatible app to synch your mail?

Indeed there is. However it's more about updating the OS. It came with a disk and I want to know what's on it also I think if I want updated via the web then I will need to use a 'blowz box. Sync isn't an issue as I can just literally use the command line to do that. It's more about patching the iPAQ for use on the web. :)

I use an rx1950 and would be lost without it! Who's gonna hook me up with a copy of Dope Wars? I used to love that on the desktop.

Everyone has been telling me off for not going for the GPS ones. However, I specifically went for a model without all the GPS and I did so because, well, I don't drive or have a car so I wouldn't ever need it really.
In using it for a few days now I'm really liking it. One thing I have noticed is the sheer amount of unlocked WiFi routers it's come across! heh...
I still miss my Palm though :(

Regarding the updates, on my old ipaq, I had to download the HP SoftPaq file, then run the executible from the desktop. It then sent the update down via the USB cradle and ran the update.
I would advise against using some emulation software to run the exe update.
Saying that though, when I wanted to get Dopewars onto mine, I could either use the installer, or copy the .cab file and open it and run it directly from the ipaq. Maybe if you can extract the updates to the ipaq, you can install them from the device.
Worst come to the worst, you can always hit the reset button . . . .
Or . . . .
